Recycled Paper at Lopez Island High School

For his Senior Project, Terrell Carter decided to study the environmental impacts of the pulp and paper industry, present some solutions to these impacts, and work to change his school’s purchasing habits and to increase paper consciousness. Carter succeeded in his goal of “Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling”: Lopez School faculty and students now give more thought to their paper consumption (for example, they print double-sided), reuse paper, and buy recycled paper. read more »

From 40% to 100%: Success for Terrell Carter

Terrell Carter at the Lopez School desired to make a difference at his school- something that would enable the school to become more energy efficient and yet would be achievable.

He first came up with the idea of replacing the school's paper with recycled paper in August of 2006, and brought up the idea with the superintendent of Lopez School. Though school officials seemed hesitant about the chance of success, they readily agreed to his idea and encouraged him to do some research.

Terrell started researching different paper suppliers from all over the country, comparing costs. "Don't be afraid to make phone calls," he advises, "Just put yourself out there." He explored various aspects of each brand of paper, including the brightness and printer quality.

In May of 2007, the switch to 40% PCW paper was complete. However, Terrell was still not satisfied- he wanted 100%. read more »

CL Social Innovator, Terrell Carter, Makes His School More Environmentally-friendly

Terrell Carter started The Lopez Energy Efficiency Project, a Conscious Lifestyle venture, to address the environmental degradation caused by his school's paper waste. He had two goals:

1. To persuade his school to switch from non-recycled paper, to paper made from post-consumer waste (PCW).

2. To reduce the amount of paper that students and teachers on Lopez Island use.

Terrell has been successful on both fronts. His school's administration has made the change to 40% PCW-paper, and Terrell is still working to move to paper made from 100% PCW content.

Terrell also launched an awareness campaign that educates students and teachers about paper waste, with tips on how to be more eco-friendly. The attached flyers are part of his campaign.

Welcome to the Energy Efficiency Project

The goal is for the Island 's K-12 school (the only school and the largest employer on the island) to use solely 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper instead of the virgin, 0-10% recycled paper they are currently using. By making the school more energy efficient, the gap between learning about a problem and doing something about a problem would be filled. Once this initial goal is achieved, the project will be replicated in other schools and country offices.
